This week's visit to the Shoalhaven by leader and Abbot of the Shaolin Buddhist order, the Venerable Shi Yong Xin, has revealed a number of impressive statistics associated with the planned temple, teaching, tourist, cultural and residential complex.
The total value of the development planned for the 1248 hectare Comberton Grange property has been put at $750 million, however its value to the local economy goes far beyond that.
Shoalhaven tourism manager Tom Phillips has estimated the tourism boost the temple and associated development would provide to the Shoalhaven would be 150,000 international and 300,000 domestic visitors each year.
And he said those figures were conservative and, more importantly, would not be as seasonal as the region's existing market.
That level of visitation would bring $171 million annually into the Shoalhaven and $316 million into the NSW economy, generating 3400 jobs throughout the State - half of them within the Shoalhaven.
Also impressive is the temple's potential impact the region's growing move into higher education, with the Chinese education system giving permission for training doctors in traditional Chinese medicine at the planned complex.
But even more impressive than the figures was the obvious respect the Shaolin monks had for the Australian bushland, and the regions unique flora and fauna, which they have promised to preserve.
Indeed, areas planned for development comprised sections already cleared and a degraded pine plantation, leaving the native bushland virtually untouched.
Clearly with so many benefits, this is a development ideally suited to an environmentally sensitive region like ours.

Booderee National Park and Booderee Botanic Gardens are the names chosen by the Wreck Bay Aboriginal Community for the former Commonwealth Jervis Bay National Park and Jervis Bay Botanic Gardens.
Booderee is an Aboriginal word from the Dhurga language meaning 'bay of plenty' or 'plenty of fish'. The White-bellied Sea Eagle is one of the many birds you can see around the park. This large white and grey eagle is the guardian of the Aboriginal people of Wreck Bay, and is represented in the park logo.
The National Park and Botanic Gardens were handed back to the Wreck Bay Aboriginal Community in 1995. The Community and the Australian Government, through the Director of National Parks, now jointly manage the Park and the Botanic Gardens.

This is highlighted in our Chamboucin, which won a bronze medal in its first vintage in 1994 and has continued to accumulate many gold, silver and bronze medals in significant wine shows. Cambewarra Estate won the first gold medal awarded in Australia for our Chamboucin Port (at Cowra in 1998), and we have also won a national trophy for our Cabernet Sauvignon.
All our wines are vintaged at Tamburlaine in the Hunter Valley from fruit grown on the Cambewarra Estate. Our chief winemakers, Mark Davidson and Simon Thistlewood, have many years experience and exceptional skill which we draw upon to produce our premium wines.
