Jervis Bay Whale Watching Festival 2008
May to November

Jervis Bay offers some of the best whale watching experiences in Australia.
Jervis Bay is fortunately placed so, that the migration, both north and south can be
observed as they pass the entrance to Jervis Bay, frequently entering the bay to rest.
The majority of whales sighted at Jervis Bay are the Humpback whales, which migrate
along the east coast from June to November.
However we do see other species on occasions such as Southern Right whales,
False Killer Whales, Orcas, Minke whales.

Jervis Bay Whale and Seal Watching Information

jervis bay dolphin watching What will the whale and seal watching experience be like ?

Every viewing is different and that adds to the expectation of the experience. Some days, you observe the whales, as they continue their travels along the coast, on other occasions we find them resting and most occasion we observe them either breaching, tail slapping or pectoral fin slapping.

No doubt you will be anticipating and wondering what your experience will be like. Whale watching is about patience and understanding that we are indeed in the whales environment. When they grace us with their presence, it's a gift. The gift cannot be controlled or timed. In their natural environment, whales will be whales, mostly swimming, sounding and occasionally displaying some of their particular behaviours. It's a privilege to be an observer. We hope your experience will leave you with a greater understanding of whales, there precious environment and what you can do as an individual that will make a difference to their world and ours.

Jervis Bay seal colony visits are a great experience to see these magnificent creatures up close and personal. They love to show off and are very active as they jump and dive through the water.

The most fascinating why to view the seals is to signup for a dive trip to the seal colony were you can view, photograph and video these gracefully creatures in their own home.

jervis bay dolphin watching Land Based Platforms Jervis Bay details below ....

The convoy of passing whales is part of the annual humpback migration, with animals the size of a suburban bus travelling from their winter feeding grounds in Antarctica to their summer birthing grounds in the Great Barrier Reef.

Many of these passing animals, which weigh up to 30 tonnes, are pregnant.

"Any headland with a clear horizon provides a vantage point for watching this migration in progress,"

"Early mornings with calm seas and clear skies provide ideal conditions. It is a fantastic way for families to see animals in the wild.

"However, people have to remember whale watching takes time and can be unpredictable. Also, most animals remain at least three kilometres out to sea, which is why it is important to take both lunch, warm clothes and binoculars if you have them."

Almost all coastal national parks and reserves have lookout platforms, which provide ideal locations. National parks that provide good whale watching headlands include: Booderee National Park, details below .....
Also from the shore line of Jervis Bay during the southern migration whales can been seen frequently with their calves in the bay.

Cruises generally offer the chance to cruise around Jervis Bay stopping to swim and/or snorkel at whim, a chance to watch the Bay's resident pod of dolphins at play or the whales that frequent the bay during the whale watching season and to relax and enjoy the pristine environment.

We can anchor up in just 1 metre of water so you don't need to be a swimmer to get to the shore and enjoy a stroll on the beach. The ocean kayak we tow is very stable and you are welcome to use, explore the reefs or just enjoy the paddle.

Many of the reefs in this marine park have lots for the snorkellers to explore. The boat comes equipped with 30 sets of masks and snorkels and adult size fins included in the cruise price.

Deep 6 Diving Jervis Bay runs winter dives to the Australian Fur Seal Colony. The seal colony at Jervis Bay (about 2.5 hours drive South of Sydney) is tucked into a small corner of the sea cliffs just south of the bay. Diving with seals is one of the most thrilling underwater experiences imaginable

The Australian Fur Seal is a curious critter and will immediately come to check you out. The crazier you act in the water the more they will hang around and show off. All they want to do is play with you. If you don’t want to play with them, they will find someone or something else to play with.

The interaction you will experience with the seals during this dive makes you feel very special. The seals are the main attraction at this dive site - fish are few (as you can imagine) and the ocean floor is composed of large boulders. Occasionally, a seal will swim straight at you baring its teeth only to veer away at the last moment leaving you behind in a whirl of tiny bubbles. It’s all part of their game. They will not bite you. Divers should be careful not to stare directly at them, as their mask looks like an enormous eye and can be a little disconcerting to the seals.

Whale Watching

Experience the pleasure of seeing some spectacular displays of the power, grace and inquisitive nature of world largest mammals.

The most common whales that we see in Jervis Bay are Humpback and Southern Right whales, whose sheer size leaves a lasting impression with all our guests.

Due to our smaller boat, we are not as intimidating to whales unlike some of the larger vessels. Because of this the whales regularly come much closer to 'Reel Time' and this gives our guests a fantastic opportunity to get as close as possible to the giants of the ocean.

Seal Colony Tour

The clowns of the sea, or common fur seals love nothing more than chasing each other around the water and then relaxing on the rocky ledges south of Jervis Bay, and you will be able to watch this all from the comfort of 'Reel Time'.

Charters to the seal colony are only available between June and September.
