Jervis Bay Whale Watching Festival 2012
May to November

Jervis Bay offers some of the best whale watching experiences in Australia.
Jervis Bay is fortunately placed so, that the migration, both north and south can be
observed as they pass the entrance to Jervis Bay, frequently entering the bay to rest.
The majority of whales sighted at Jervis Bay are the Humpback whales, which migrate
along the east coast from June to November.
However we do see other species on occasions such as Southern Right whales,
False Killer Whales, Orcas, Minke whales.

Jervis Bay Whale and Seal Watching Information

jervis bay dolphin watching What will the whale and seal watching experience be like ?

Every viewing is different and that adds to the expectation of the experience. Some days, you observe the whales, as they continue their travels along the coast, on other occasions we find them resting and most occasion we observe them either breaching, tail slapping or pectoral fin slapping.

No doubt you will be anticipating and wondering what your experience will be like. Whale watching is about patience and understanding that we are indeed in the whales environment. When they grace us with their presence, it's a gift. The gift cannot be controlled or timed. In their natural environment, whales will be whales, mostly swimming, sounding and occasionally displaying some of their particular behaviours. It's a privilege to be an observer. We hope your experience will leave you with a greater understanding of whales, there precious environment and what you can do as an individual that will make a difference to their world and ours.

Jervis Bay seal colony visits are a great experience to see these magnificent creatures up close and personal. They love to show off and are very active as they jump and dive through the water.

The most fascinating why to view the seals is to signup for a dive trip to the seal colony were you can view, photograph and video these gracefully creatures in their own home.

jervis bay dolphin watching Land Based Platforms Jervis Bay details below ....

The convoy of passing whales is part of the annual humpback migration, with animals the size of a suburban bus travelling from their winter feeding grounds in Antarctica to their summer birthing grounds in the Great Barrier Reef.

Many of these passing animals, which weigh up to 30 tonnes, are pregnant.

"Any headland with a clear horizon provides a vantage point for watching this migration in progress,"

"Early mornings with calm seas and clear skies provide ideal conditions. It is a fantastic way for families to see animals in the wild.

"However, people have to remember whale watching takes time and can be unpredictable. Also, most animals remain at least three kilometres out to sea, which is why it is important to take both lunch, warm clothes and binoculars if you have them."

Almost all coastal national parks and reserves have lookout platforms, which provide ideal locations. National parks that provide good whale watching headlands include: Booderee National Park, details below .....
Also from the shore line of Jervis Bay during the southern migration whales can been seen frequently with their calves in the bay.

Dive Jervis Bay runs winter dives to the Australian Fur Seal Colony. The seal colony at Jervis Bay (about 2.5 hours drive South of Sydney) is tucked into a small corner of the sea cliffs just south of the bay. Diving with seals is one of the most thrilling underwater experiences imaginable

The Australian Fur Seal is a curious critter and will immediately come to check you out. The crazier you act in the water the more they will hang around and show off. All they want to do is play with you. If you don’t want to play with them, they will find someone or something else to play with.

The interaction you will experience with the seals during this dive makes you feel very special. The seals are the main attraction at this dive site - fish are few (as you can imagine) and the ocean floor is composed of large boulders. Occasionally, a seal will swim straight at you baring its teeth only to veer away at the last moment leaving you behind in a whirl of tiny bubbles. It’s all part of their game. Dive Jervis Bay runs seal colony dives between June and October.

Jervis Bay Whales is operated locally by Dolphin Watch Cruises, Jervis Bay's original cruise company, operating since 1990.

Our Vessel, "Tekin III - The Spirit of Jervis Bay", is the largest Whale Watching vessel on the South Coast of NSW, offering 5 viewing decks from our 17 metre tripple deck Catamaran.

Jervis Bay is fast becoming the whale watching capital of NSW, rivalling Hervey Bay for the title as the nation's whale watching capital. The pristine environs of the Jervis Bay Marine Park make Jervis Bay the ideal base for whale watching- " eco -tourism" at its best!

The southern migration is particularly special because Jervis Bay offers a much needed "rest stop" for the mothers and their calves on their long journey back home. This affords passengers the opportunity to see mothers and calves frolicking in the sheltered waters inside Jervis Bay. "We simply switch off the engines and watch as the whales swim up to the boat to investigate what all the fuss is about."

We are so confident, we guarantee that you will see whales.... if not a free return cruise.

Cruises: Daily 9.30 am - Whales Are Gurantteed! May - late November. We see more whales as we cruise more often.....
